Cybersecurity firm McAfee on Monday announced the list of celebrities who were more likely to land users on websites that are infected with malware or viruses and the ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ star, Alexis Bledel topped the list.
Trailing Bledel at No 2 is late-night talk show host James Corden, who is followed by Game Of Thrones star Sophie Turner, Anna Kendrick, Lupita Nyong’o, television talk show star Jimmy Fallon, Jackie Chan, the rappers Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, and lastly Marvel on-screen character Tessa Thompson at No 10.
The study is intended to focus on the risk of clicking on suspicious links while searching for the celebrities included in this list. People with bad intentions will attach malware and malicious sites to the names of famous people, with the hope that fans scanning the web for videos and other content will fall victims.
McAfee urges users to consider dangers related to searching for pirated content online and wants them to make use of the security fixes.
“Consumers may not be fully aware that the searches they conduct pose risk, nor may they understand the detrimental effects that can occur when personal information is compromised in exchange for access to their favorite celebrities, movies, TV shows or music,” Gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist at McAfee, said in a statement.
Davis clarified that Bledel and Sophie Turner likely landed at the top of the list as they were part of The Handmaid’s Tale and Game Of Thrones respectively.
He further explained that talk show hosts Corden and Fallon must’ve landed in the list because of their viral talk show videos, while enthusiasm for ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ likely put Nyong’o so high. Lil Wayne’s late summer tour with Blink-182 may have induced fans to search for pirated downloads.
Jackie Chan’s name on the comes as a big surprise as he hardly had any movies or publicity surrounding him. However, Davis shared that gossip surrounding that Chan might return in Rush Hour 4 and Karate Kid 2 might have made users to search for him. Even though Chan’s team has denied the rumours, yet cybercriminals hopped in, planning to “target fans who were overcome by nostalgia and less cautious about their personal security.”
