Game of Thrones star Kit Harington was surprised and shocked to find out about his character’s original love interest in the series. Harington who played the role of Jon Snow on the hit HBO fantasy show was in a relationship with Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen, who was his aunt – but this wasn’t the pairing that George R.R. Martin was initially thinking about.
Author George R.R. Martin, initially had the idea of Jon getting romantically involved with his sister, Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). During a video chat, a fan told Kit of the original plan for his character’s relationship, to which he replied: “They wanted Jon with Sansa?! What? No! What? That’s weird!”
In the realm of Game of Thrones, it’s not rare for a marriage to happen between siblings, and we have seen that happening in the show. Also, the Targaryens are known for getting siblings wedded to preserve the family lineage. Jon’s partnership with Sansa will surely have been an odd scenario, however, it wouldn’t have been too shocking in the world of Game of Thrones.
Also, Jon and Sansa weren’t siblings and were actually cousins, that means the pair would have been in a position to tie the knot.
If this materialised, it would have brought together the Stark and Targaryen houses and made them the most powerful couple in Westeros.
Last week, Kit admitted he hasn’t yet watched the Game of Thrones finale, even though it’s been a year since the show got over. The hit HBO show came to a finish in May 2019, with Kit’s character Jon Snow stabbing his lover Daenerys before being exiled to the North.
During a Q&A session with @purple_dwagon on Twitter, Kit mentioned “I haven’t seen it”, while discussing Jon’s return to the North.
He added: “When people say to me, ‘I wish you’d been on the Throne or I wish you’d been with Dany on the Throne,’ I disagree because Jon’s place was always in the North.
“He’s never have been happy in the South. He’s like Ned Stark. Ned goes to the South he’s in danger… [Jon] belongs North of the Wall.”
