George R.R. Martin is a busy busy man who has been simultaneously been working on multiple projects, which includes A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones history books, Wild Cards, and lots more and now he is developing a new Game of Thrones play that is set to head to Broadway in the future.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the play will bring back a number of our beloved characters, and will focus on The Great Tourney. The Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon is going to focus on the Targaryen Civil War, while the play will bring back characters like Ned Stark, Lyanna Stark, Jaime Lannister, Lord Robert Baratheon, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince Oberyn Martell, Ser Barristan Selmy to count a few.
The Great Tourney is an important even in Game of Thrones history and it was held over 10 days and all the aforementioned characters played a part in it and the tourney set into motion events that lead to the events that we witnessed in Game of Thrones.
George R.R. Martin had the following to say about his upcoming project. “The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace,” Martin noted. “Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring. It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice & Fire … and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.”
Here’s the official synopsis of the play:
“The production will boast a story centered around love, vengeance, madness, and the dangers of dealing in prophecy, in the process revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now.”
The Game of Thrones play is expected to arrive in New York, London’s West End, and in Australia, with a launch date sometime in 2023.
