From dragons and fire to martinis and espionage; Emilia Clarke, who’s become a household name for playing the role of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, has revealed that she would like to play the iconic British spy James Bond if the lead character of Bond was to be gender swapped.
Speaking to Empire about her new festive movie Last Christmas, Clarke was asked if she ever thought about playing the role of James Bond and would she agree to play the role if the movie was ever offered to her? Her response: “Yeah! Of course! Hell to the yeah!”
She went on to elucidate that the long-running movie series has still managed to maintain its appeal even after 50 years in which 25 movies have been released. “James Bond is one of those franchises where it’s never not cool,” she mentioned. “You could literally make the naffest James Bond in the world and it would still be cool.”
Of course, Clarke isn’t the only celebrity who has been asked this question. Her Last Christmas co-star Henry Golding has been rumoured to be in contention to play Bond in an upcoming film, and musician Harry Styles is also open to playing the character.
While Bond will still be played by Daniel Craig in the 25th film in the franchise, No Time to Die will show the legendary “007” codename being handed on to a woman after Bond retires. Lashana Lynch will play the brand new 007, making her the second black lady to play an important role Craig-era films, following Naomie Harris, who has been playing the role of Eve Moneypenny since 2012’s Skyfall.
Daniel Craig has confirmed No Time to Die shall be his final Bond film, leaving the franchise open for a brand new star. Former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has already said that he thinks a female version of the character will be an “exciting” development for the movie franchise.
