Imagine how glad you’d be if you looked like Game of Thrones and Aquaman star, Jason Momoa. That’s exactly the case for one Welsh man who, as it happens, shares an strange similarity with the Hawaiian star – so much so that he’s often mistaken for the 6ft 4in hunk.
And now Dan Handley, a car trader from Port Talbot, has taken his lookalike traits to the next level. After being confused for the Khal Drogo actor over a year ago, he’s since been attending children’s parties as Momoa’s comic book counterpart.
“I get recognised all the time,” said Dan, 36, who was at the Comic Con in Swansea this weekend. “I go to the kids’ parties and the kids all run towards Spider-Man, the mothers all run towards Aquaman — it’s a hard old life.”
He said since the Aquaman movie has come out, he’s been getting a lot more lookalike work, and has started doing compliment acts – a lot of it Aquaman based. But it’s not just the kids parties. “I also do ladies’ nights – they’re quite popular,” he adds, laughing. “I’m a car trader by day and Aquaman by night.”
He’s now working with Superhero Patrol in Swansea, attending events and doing charity work – the lookalikes often go around local hospitals. He said they’ll be going soon to give out Easter eggs in the kids wards which he said is “really rewarding“.
Dan said he first spotted the similarities after it was pointed out to him when he was selling a car.
He said: “I was selling a car and the woman pulled up and said ‘oh wow you look like that Dothraki guy from Game of Thrones’. I was like ‘Who the hell’s that?’ because I wasn’t into Game of Thrones at the time. He wasn’t exactly an A-lister then. So I looked him up and thought, yeah he kind of does – we do resemble each other.”
Now Dan’s colored the end of his hair and styles himself after the actor, he gets spotted a lot more – and people sometimes don’t trust he isn’t the Hollywood star.
He said: “We went to a local Indian – the film had just come out and the staff asked if I was Momoa. When I said no, he asked if I was his brother. He had his phone out and went around the restaurant showing everyone.
They’ve had pictures of Samuel L Jackson on the walls, people the manager had met; he had me up taking pictures with the staff. He wouldn’t have it – he didn’t believe I wasn’t him. I get that a lot,” he laughs.
