‘Aquaman’ has officially passed ‘Batman v Superman’ at the domestic box office. The movie which features Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis in his first-ever standalone feature movie managed a total of $1.88 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $331.37 million, and topping the domestic box office take of Batman v Superman ($330M).
Compared to the rest of the franchise, the movie ranks in second, only behind the $412 million gross of Wonder Woman in North America. Aquaman has already taken the number one spot in the franchise globally with its worldwide total and is also the highest-grossing DC movie of all time.
Based on characters created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the script has been written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, Wan and Beall.
A sequel is presently in the works. Warner Bros. has tapped Aquaman writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to come back to pen the script. Jason Momoa is expected to reprise his role.
